Ferro-vanadium prices slipped in Europe on Wednesday September 17, as market participants reported a depressed market.

Metal Bulletin's quotation dropped to $25.20-25.90 per kg on Wednesday, down 20 cents on the bottom end, and some suggested prices could slide as low as $25 per kg.

Prices have failed to see a turnaround following the traditionally quiet summer period, and one trader even suggested some orders are being reconsidered.

"I made an offer at [a low price] and [the buyer] tried to push it down [even further]," a second trader said.

However, there is some suggestion that prices could soon take a very different direction, as supply may be coming out of Europe to go to Russia.

"We're seeing a lot more demand from Russia. It's basically taking out [a large] tonnage from the spot market," a seller said.

He added that he believes supplies to Ukraine have not been disrupted, although there have been issues at steel plants there.

"A lot of them are having disruption to their supply chains for things like coal and coke and other products," he said.
The real driver, according to the seller, is an increase in infrastructure projects in Russia, such as railway construction.

"We're seeing unusually high demand for ferro-vanadium from the Russian market. It's a combination of things. A lot of these are governmental projects, so steel mills are obliged to provide steel for them," he added.
