Business continued to be concluded at the low end of the quotation, but was also concluded at higher levels, driven largely by trading activity.

"It's an interesting story. Yesterday, there were a couple of consumers in the market but, in the last couple of weeks, all of the [bigger companies] have settled," a trader said.

"They've purchased all their material and they've got enough now until the beginning of September. In the next month, there will be no [consumer] demand," the trader added.

In the absence of major consumer business, traders have been leading the market in recent days and at least some market participants believe there may be more rises to come.

"I had a firm bid [below $25], which I accepted [earlier in the week] but now I definitely won't go below $25.50," a seller said.

A second seller added that a major rebound in prices is expected in mid-August, at which point he believes there will be enough consumer demand to support it.

Chinese offers, which were previously markedly below the European offers, have also risen, providing at least temporary support to the price.

Offers in Europe have already come in at close to $26, market participants said, but have not yet been concluded at such high levels, and there is doubt in some corners over whether this will be possible.

"It's all rumours. No one is buying there and I think it will slow down again. Everybody will be waiting for the next round of demand," the trader said.

"I don't expect this trade activity to keep it up. They've forced it up and someone will force it to go down," the trader added.

Metal Bulletin's quotation moved up to $24.60-25.30 per kg in Europe, up 30 cents on the top end compared with Friday July 25.
